Why is Hollywood hell bent on not creating original IP ever again? It seems like every movie is either a sequel, a reboot, a reimagining, etc. Does anyone just sit down and say “Hey, let’s create a brand new story with new characters and new ideas!”
Could it be that we are tired of seeing the same old stories with some “controversial” changes and then months of press complaining about people wanting to see or not wanting to see it?
It couldn’t be my imagination that in the 90s there were way less sequels/reboots.
It isn’t yourimagination.
What it really comes down to is risk. In the 90s, studios relied on the dvd release as a second boost to revenue so if a film didn’t do well in theaters it had a back up.
With physical media all but gone the studios can only rely on theater revenue which has to be split with the theater itself.
Because of this, execs are sticking with successful old faithfuls rather than risking money on unprodictable new IP.
Original movies are still being made, they’re just not advertised as much as IP-based movies.
3 out of how many though?
I think a bunch of ip copyright will be public domain soon, so they are squeezing the last bit of money out. All the original artists are probably dead, so they don’t have to pay royalties. I dunno
I read that’s why we have so many super hero movies. I’m guessing all this stuff got copyright protection in the fifties.
The controversy: It’s a terrible movie wrapped up in an intentionally controversial blanket so there’s an easy excuse when it flops.
Apparently Gal Godot gives her worst performance yet as the Evil Stepmother.
She really is the rare case of an actor getting progressively worse with every movie.
Is she getting worse or are more people aware she’s always been bad?
I think in this case, Godot was miscast.
I understand any actress wanting to expand their range, particularly her wanting to be known anything else other than Wonder Woman. See Leonard Nimoy and his “I’m not Spock” phase.
Sometimes, you just gotta own it tho…
A friend who watched Snow White with me thought she was okay, but I didn’t think she sold being EVIL enough.
Maybe we don’t want live action versions of all your good movies?
Maybe we want new stories to enjoy?
Maybe, just maybe, you made a bad movie?
We just want some original good animation. Why do that so hard, make something new please. Everything these days is a remake or poor quality slop. I’m seeing higher quality output from indie animation
Hey!, I can fix it! Hey, I can fix anything! Just ask it a question! Sometimes Hey, I hallucinate if drunk.
With all the “news stories” on the “controversy” surrounding this movie, I figured it was all manufactured drama to get people talking about it enough to watch it. If that’s true it’s a damn shame this is where we are in pop culture that even genocide is being used as a box office draw.
It was a shitty movie, that’s what went wrong.
And however obnoxious the racism on Twitter was about it, you can’t blame that for the thing losing a hundred mil.
This movie was a perfect storm of stupidity, narcissism, incompetence, and Hollywood. Maybe now we can have normal movies again written with nuanced women like Ripley, Sarah Connor, Beatrix Kiddo, and Trinity, instead of this atrocious Mary Sue slop.
If you consider that for every one person who recognises it as Mary sue slop, there are millions who like projecting their victim complex on those characters. The problem is not the industry, it’s the audience that fuels it.
What audience lol
You’re right but apparently that audience isn’t there anymore.
I don’t see that happening.
Most of the remakes made money this one was just pure bile.
[off topic]
If you want a modern take on Snow White et al, here’s the book for you.
The author takes all the Disney princesses and makes them evil. Snow White was so pale because she’s a vampire. Cinderella is a witch who drives the poor Prince insane.
Honestly that sounds rad
Thanks for sharing!
The author’s bio is remarkable…
She was named after an anceint Goddess. Then it gets weird…
This is the part where Disney blames bigots rather than admitting they just made a bad movie people never wanted to watch
the AI/CGI was so cringy too.
What bothers me is that some of the scenes did look beautiful.
They purposely casted controversial actors hoping to get free publicity - Hollywood’s new favourite marketing ploy is outrage casting. But this time it didn’t pay off.
Bigots definitely didn’t help, but I know far more people who didn’t go simply because “why would I want to see that?” Vs bigots
The bigots who got riled up by fox bews wouldn’t go to see it anyway. Maybe if they turn the evil witch jewish and snow white was the good nazi child.
Outside of Maleficent, all of them have been shot for shot remakes (with one additional scene/song to make it “different”). And animation is just a better medium for magic and whimsy compared to what you can do in live action.
Couldn’t agree more. If I wanted to watch someone pretend to have magical powers and interact with nonexistent set pieces, I’d assemble my game group. There’s so much that you can do with animation that just cannot be done live action. I miss when animated movies had distinct styles that contributed to the atmosphere the fiction was building. Live action is comparatively empty of expression.
I’m probably preaching to the choir, but Arcane, Scavengers Reign, and Nimona all check those boxes, and are all well worth watching.
Thank you for the suggestions. I’ve already seen arcane, and apparently scavenger’s rain is already on my list, though I don’t remember adding it. Just added nimona though. Arcane definitely fits the bill, so I imagine the others will as well. It really is a great example of how the medium affects the message.
“we made the ultimate masterpiece and THE only people disagreeing with us are trolls/incels/haters/trump voters/faschists/literal SATAN” is a two pronged attack. Not only it makes everyone not in the loop think “oh no poor tiny company disney is being bullied for the movie I used to love as a kid!”. The person is likely to see a comment not liking the movie and think instantly that person is terrible.
Second is “I was lukewarm on the movie but man I don’t wanna be one of them nazis who hates this movie”
Classic change the conversation from absolute waste of money and creative bankruptsy of disney to culture war strategy straight out of literally the russian kgb playbook.
None of this would be a problem if Disney had made a good movie.
But Disney didn’t.
Zegler is a talented young actress and singer, has had notable roles already, and will continue to have a great career.
Gal Godot has been a great Wonder Woman.
Both are good, regardless of what they post on social media.
The script, production and whole concept of this movie had far worse problems than Zegler and Godot.
Creepy dwarfs? Cheap looking plastic jewels? Boring script? Bad dance numbers? Bad music?
Were Zegler and Godot responsible for all of those?
Releasing the movie to influencers would NOT have helped the word-of-mouth. You have to make a good movie to begin with for that to work.
Zegler is a talented young actress and singer,
You don’t find anything unusual about her acting? Every time I see her it feels like she’s acting, no matter what it is. Movies, interviews, social media, any glimpse is uncanny. Obviously she is “acting” in all those, at least a little, but I get the impression it wouldn’t change even in person. Real skin walker vibes. She creeps me out.
There’s a school of acting where you’re supposed to more-or-less keep a blank face, and let the audience project emotions onto your protagonist. Richard Gere was famous for it. I want to say it’s Method Acting, but that’s not it.
It doesn’t work if the writing doesn’t work.
They had the chance to adapt the original movie they were too scared to the first time. Make it r-rated or something. i don’t understand who’s the movie is for.
Upon reflection, one of the concept mistakes was slavishly following the original plot.
The embellishments like the happy citizens, Evil Queen’s love for cheap plastic jewels, apple pies, etc. just felt unnecessary and tacked on.
Disney already made Maleficent relatively recently in 2014 as a meta take on the original, so where could they go from there?
Hm… I thought she was poisoned by an apple. Man… What else did they change in this movie from the original?
This time it was a samsung
She’s got a computer virus xavier saved her tho
The original movie was made very much with an audience from 100 years ago in mind. Boomers have nostalgia for it, so can’t change the script too much. Meanwhile, millennials are socially aware and see the problems with the story. Disney tried to make everyone happy, and generate a little bit of free press, and failed to make anyone happy.
This was a remake that should never have gotten off the ground.
It’s not even that. This story is easily watchable in any way you’d like, and everyone has probably already seen it as a kid.
The original can absolutely be enjoyed by younger generations without it needing to be changed. It has tons of great life lessons and allegories, if that’s what you want. It can also just be a fun kids movie. Disney altered it for the same reason they’ve been altering movies for more than a decade now: they HAD to have a Strong Female Lead who is smarter and better than the men at everything all the time.

Even a straight up copy/paste of the original animated film to live action would have been better.
Don’t mention the Palestinians in Hollywood, simple
Disney execs were like “You don’t want an aparthied state to ethnically cleanse and bomb occupied people tents and burn and amputate children? How outragous of you! Anyway our movies are focused on spreading joy to kids.”
We have enriched these billionares for too long. This fucking rotten disney empire deserves to parish from our lives forever.
