Studios didn’t own the streaming or broadcast TV channels then. Now they make more money by selling the property through channels they own and control.

It’s crazy that the studio would spend more than half the amount of the movie’s budget on marketing. Of course this is Hollywood accounting so who knows where that money actually went.

Which is probably why they have millions of subscribers but are still losing money.
I’d argue studios shouldn’t own the channels at all. It’s hamstringing the industry, starving out movie theaters and preventing creatives from shopping their content to competitors.
They have all those Taylor Sheridan programs people are hooked on as well.
They’re losing out because the studios own the streaming channels, not the theaters. They make more profit by sending the movie out of the theater and onto their channels as soon as possible.
Most movies aren’t made for the big screen anymore anyway. The studios own the streaming channels, and that’s where the money is. Marvel movies are designed to stay in the theater for a few weeks, but the rest are destined for a shorter release window so they can go straight to streaming.
