i learned how to do this before code sharing sites like github existed and it forced me to turn everything i’ve learned into muscle memory and i think that this next generation of greybeards are going to be so much better than my generation’s greybeards because of it.

i’ve done this using android and linux.

i’ve repurposed my old androids to turn them into wireless cameras for my home made security system based on the motion project as well as created a homemade lojack and dashcam for my car. some phones i was able to root and i picked and chose what software ran on it and the others, i disabled as many services/apps as i could to make them as minimalistic as possible.

for linux, i created my own home made router and wifi access point; but it’s kind of the opposite of minimalistic as it’s a full blown linux server with virtual machines and desktop environment to help with management.

i provided both extremes to mirror what others have said: it’s hard to provide advice without knowing what your goal is.

there’s multiple ways to skin this cat, but in your shoes: i would use xmodmap to remap or disable those keys.

the ultra high end computers with coreboot/libreboot from linux makers (ie system76, slimbook, tuxedo, pursim, starlabs, etc.) are the only things you’re going to find with comparative build quality, but a significantly higher price tag.

you could also get one of the high end computers from ordinary computer makers, but the build quality is going to vary a lot, even with computers from the same manufacturer.

in your shoes: i would switch to different connection method to see if it’s curl that’s causing your problem. ssh w sshfs would be the easiest switch since it doesn’t required you to modify the ftp server, other than to install the ssh server.

if it’s connects, then you know that curl is your culprit and you can further narrow down the problem; or just stick w ssh.

if it doesn’t connect, then you know that curl is probably okay and that your problem is elsewhere.

you don’t have to follow a wiki anymore; there are distro’s out there that specialize in repairing broken bootloaders using a point-and-click interface and they’re great if you’re as lazy as i am. lol

my xiaomi is clearly far superior than the other phones i’ve had at this price point and i want to stick with that brand for as long as i can now that i know what to do to get them to work in this country.

The rabbit hole I went into to get my smartphone to work in this country has taught me that Google silently placed controls that American carriers wanted into all Android builds since at least version 12 so it’s not hard to imagine that the likes of Netgear or Linksys doing something similar to the stock firmware of thier home routers in the near future, when Uncle Sam inevitably tells them to.

In at&t’s & signia’s case: Uncle Sam hasn’t said anything yet, they decided to pre-comply out of their own accord; so it doesn’t even have to be a law.

even if you got them; you’re going to encounter some stupid rules:

i bought at xiaomi phone and i can’t use it on most cell phone carriers in the united states because they’re banned based on their imea to please uncle sam; so it doesn’t matter that it’s capable of working, it’s just not allowed.

same is true for hearing aids: when i connect them using ordinary bluetooth, they work fine on both my xiaomi and samsung phones; but when i use the recommended software, they only work on the samsung and their tech support told me that they don’t work on “banned” hardware like xiaomi or huawei.

i bet, in the near future, huawei’s hardware will be banned from connecting to wifi networks based on thier mac address and american smart phones will refuse to share data w then via hotspot for the same reason.
